Children with ADHD

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:01 pm

Much morbidity and disability is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents in America, and nearly 5% of school-aged children – that means both girls and boys – are affected with the problem.Since ADHD is related to thought processes, children suffering from it are deficient in a chemical (namely dopamine and norepinephrine) in their brains responsible for organizing thought. As a result, they show inattentiveness and impulsivity/hyperactivity. As a consequence, these children remain at risk of developing new psychiatric disorders as they grow. These problems can manifest in the form of mood disorders, conduct and oppositional defiant disorders, anxiety disorders, learning disabilities and social disabilities.Research has established that ADHD children often times have parents or relatives who suffer from the disability as well.Although it is not known what causes ADHD in children, research seems to lean to a hereditary link as a cause of the problem. As defined in the latest 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), ADHD in children is termed as a behavioral disorder that has its onset by the age of 7 years. According to DSM-IV, “children with ADHD are unable to concentrate, are intrusiveness into others’ conversations, and keep moving here and there on account of their inability to stay seated in one place.” Based on DSM-IV criteria, ADHD in children is categorized into 3 subtypes, which include a predominantly inattentive subtype, a predominantly hyperactive/impulsive subtype and a combined type where both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms are present.ADHD provides detailed information on ADHD, ADHD Treatment, Children with ADHD, ADHD Symptoms and more. ADHD is affiliated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
